(AURN News) — Legendary Chicago DJ Sam Chatman, known as the “Godfather of Steppin’,” has died at 85, according to ABC7 Chicago.
A proud Chicago West Sider, Chatman helped popularize Steppin’, a dance tradition deeply rooted in Black Chicago culture. In the 1970s, he coined the term “Steppin'” on Chicago’s South Side, helping transform a local dance movement into an international phenomenon.
Through decades of DJ performances, community events and music showcases, Chatman introduced generations to the art of Steppin’, which continues to thrive across the country and around the world.
In 2025, a street in Chicago’s West Pullman neighborhood was dedicated in his honor. Chatman was also the father of ABC7 Chicago anchor Samantha Chatman.
In a statement, his family described him as a devoted husband, father, son and brother whose wisdom deeply influenced his community.
His legacy lives on through Chicago’s rich musical and dance traditions. Rest in peace, DJ Sam Chatman.
