(AURN News) — Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat, former union organizer and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, scored a major upset in the state’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, defeating retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman, who rose to national prominence as a key witness in President Donald Trump’s first impeachment.
Nixon won with nearly 56% of the vote despite being outraised more than 16-to-1. Her victory made her the first DSA member to win a major-party nomination for statewide office in Florida.
She will face Sen. Ashley Moody, R-Fla., in November. Moody is expected to be favored in the general election, and Nixon addressed that challenge after her primary win.
“Some folks like Ashley Moody like to claim the mantle of morality. Yet their actions tell a very different story. But we put actions behind our words. So Ashley Moody can call us whatever she wants. But in November, she will call me senator,” Nixon said during her victory speech Tuesday night.
