WASHINGTON (AURN News) — A federal judge temporarily blocked President Donald Trump’s White House ban on three news outlets Thursday.
U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly, a Trump appointee, ordered officials to immediately restore White House credentials to reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico, finding that the outlets were likely to succeed on their due process claim because they were not given adequate notice or an opportunity to respond before losing access.
The three outlets were banned Friday, and their reporters were turned away from White House grounds the next day. They sued Monday, arguing the move violated their First Amendment rights.
Kelly’s order is temporary. The temporary restraining order remains in effect for 14 days while the lawsuit continues, and the Justice Department is expected to appeal after arguing the outlets’ reporting raised national security concerns.
The reporters are legally cleared to return, but journalists from CNN, MS NOW and Politico said they were still turned away Thursday morning when they tried to enter the White House.
