(AURN News) Four Republican senators broke ranks with their own party Tuesday and, in doing so, handed Democrats a rare but significant victory.

Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rand Paul of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana crossed the aisle to join nearly all Democrats in passing a war powers resolution directing President Donald Trump to withdraw U.S. troops from the conflict with Iran.

The resolution passed both chambers but does not carry the full force of law. That’s the catch.

It cannot be vetoed because it is a concurrent resolution, making it more of a formal political rebuke than a binding order.

The White House wasted little time dismissing it, calling it, quote, “insignificant.”

But do not overlook the move, because Democrats have forced war powers votes nearly every week Congress has been in session since the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran began Feb. 28.
