President Joe Biden is set to welcome three Democratic Tennessee lawmakers, known as the “Tennessee Three,” to the White House. The trio faced expulsion votes earlier this month for protesting in favor of gun control.
Reps. Justin Jones, Gloria Johnson, and Justin Pearson made headlines when they used a bullhorn to address the State House floor following a mass shooting at a Nashville Christian school that left six people dead, including three nine-year-old students.
Tennessee Republicans accused the lawmakers of bringing disorder and dishonor. Jones and Pearson, both Black, were expelled, while Johnson, who was white, was not.
The expulsions have been criticized as undemocratic and racist by the ousted representatives. They are asking the president to declare a public health emergency on gun violence, believing an emergency response is necessary due to the inaction of their state legislature.
Biden has previously expressed his limitations in addressing gun violence and urged Congress to act on the matter.
