(AURN News) — With 13 days until the midterm elections, President Donald Trump is heading to South Carolina today as Republicans spend millions to protect a Senate seat in a state they usually count on winning.
Tonight’s rally in Pendleton supports Sen. Darline Graham against Democratic challenger Annie Andrews, a pediatrician. The Associated Press reports that more than $34 million has poured into the race.
The pressure stretches beyond South Carolina, though. The Associated Press reports that the Senate Leadership Fund, a major Republican super PAC, is shifting resources from North Carolina’s Senate race as Republican Michael Whatley trails Democrat Roy Cooper in the polls.
Trump also brings his own political baggage: A Reuters/Ipsos poll found his approval rating at 31%, with 68% of Americans disapproving of his handling of the economy.
Republican Sen. Thom Tillis told Politico his party was headed toward “a train wreck” in November. Trump insists Republicans will outperform the polls. His challenge is convincing voters that keeping Republicans in power will ease their cost of living.
