(AURN News) — President Donald Trump is holding a rally tonight in Corinth, Mississippi, a state he won by about 23 percentage points in 2024. This is happening eight days before the midterms. The visit highlights an unexpectedly competitive Senate race in a reliably Republican state.
He’s stumping for Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith, who faces Democrat Scott Colom, a district attorney in northern Mississippi who would be the state’s first Black U.S. senator since Reconstruction.
Mississippi has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1982. The race has tightened, drawing Democratic funding, a campaign visit from former Vice President Kamala Harris and an ad featuring former President Barack Obama.
Meanwhile, Trump’s approval rating has fallen. An Oct. 16-19 Reuters/Ipsos poll put his approval rating at 31%, his lowest in that poll across either presidential term. A separate Pew Research Center survey conducted Sept. 28-Oct. 4 found his approval rating at 30%.
Republicans say this trip is about turnout, arguing Trump brings out voters who skip midterms. Colom says it shows Hyde-Smith is scared.
