The Black unemployment rate fell to 5% in March, down from 5.7% in February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. This marks the lowest rate for Black unemployment since 1972 when data started being recorded by race.
White unemployment stood at 3.2%. Historically, the Black unemployment rate has consistently been double that of the white rate. This 2-to-1 disparity has remained largely constant for decades, a trend the Center for American Progress attributes to structural racism.
In a statement, President Joe Biden said, “Thanks to the policies we have put in place, the recovery is creating good jobs that you can raise a family on, which is pulling more Americans into the labor force.”
