Mourners gathered today at Mount Neboh Baptist Church in Harlem to remember Jordan Neely, a 30-year-old homeless Black man who was tragically killed aboard a New York City subway train. Rev. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy at the ceremony, which is being livestreamed.
Neely’s life was cut short when Daniel Penny, a 24-year-old white ex-Marine, choked him into unconsciousness. A distressing video, which has now gone viral, shows Neely under duress with two unidentified men aiding in the restraint. Independent journalist Juan Alberto Vasquez, who filmed the incident, reports nearly was pleading for food and water prior to the altercation.
Penny has been charged with manslaughter, while his defense claims self-defense and protection of other subway passengers.
Well known locally as a Michael Jackson impersonator, Neely’s mental health struggles began following his mother’s murder when he was just 14. He’s now being laid to rest by the same pastor who officiated his mother’s funeral.
