New numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that hiring remains strong as the Federal Reserve continues to battle inflation. In June, total non-farm payroll employment increased by 209,000, and the unemployment rate remained steady at 3.6%. The areas seeing the biggest growth were government, health care, social assistance, and construction jobs.
The unemployment rate for African Americans showed little change at 6.0% in June. But, among other major worker groups, the unemployment rates for Whites declined to 3.1%, while rates for adult men, adult women, teenagers, Asians, and Hispanics remained relatively stable.
Government employment rose by 60,000, with gains in state and local government. Health care added 41,000 jobs, while social assistance saw an increase of 24,000 jobs.
