Dozens were arrested at North Carolina’s statehouse over the weekend as Republican lawmakers pushed through a series of bills aimed at limiting the power of the incoming Democratic governor. A protest led by Rev. William Barber, President of the North Carolina State Conference of the NAACP included chants of “Forward Together, Not One Step Back.” Outgoing Republican Governor Pat McCrory, who lost to Democrat Roy Cooper by about 10,000 votes in November signed into law.

Meantime, the bill merges the State Board of Elections and State Ethics Commission into one board composed equally of Democrats and Republicans. The previous state elections board law would have allowed Cooper to put a majority of Democrats on the panel.
The law would also make elections for appellate court judgeships officially partisan again, which could favor Republicans.
Dozens were arrested as protesters interrupted legislative proceedings.
