A Democratic congresswoman from Virginia says the party needs new leadership, according to the Washington Post. In a recent statement, Rep. Abigail Spanberger said elected officials should serve the people — not themselves. She’s leading the charge on legislation to ban members of Congress and their immediate families from trading individual stocks. The bipartisan bill is called the TRUST in Congress Act, and would require individual stock holdings be divested or placed in a qualified blind trust while members of Congress are in office.
In a press release, Rep. Spanberger said, “In the months ahead, I will be dogged in my efforts to ban Members of Congress from using the privilege of their position to profit. I look forward to working with both my Democratic and Republican colleagues to get these reforms done.”
Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi’s response:
“So I didn’t see, I mean, I don’t know what her statement is, but it is contrary to what the House Administration Committee — I said to them, whatever you, whatever the members want to do, I fully support. And — and they took her bill, added other — others that made the bill stronger, as a matter of fact. So this is an interesting press release, but it’s more important to write a bill.”
