It’s crunch time on Capitol Hill — sending Republicans in a mad dash to push through President Donald Trump’s nearly 1,000-page One Big Beautiful Bill Act, a mix of tax breaks for the wealthy and deep cuts to health care and social spending ahead of the July 4 holiday. But after a weekend of political chaos, that plan is looking shaky.
A planned all-night amendment marathon was delayed and is now expected to begin when the Senate opens today.
Democrats are prepared to pounce, with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer promising amendment after amendment to expose what he calls tax cuts for billionaires and health care cuts for everyday Americans.
According to the Congressional Budget Office, if the bill becomes law, 11.8 million more people could lose health care coverage by 2034. The bill would also add nearly $3.3 trillion to the deficit over the next 10 years.
Tensions flared over the weekend when North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis announced he will not seek reelection after being criticized by Trump for opposing Medicaid cuts.
He said the bill threatens rural hospitals and breaks Trump’s promise not to remove people from health care coverage.
