On June 27, 1987, Whitney Houston made music history with the release of her album “Whitney.” She became the first woman ever to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart — in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The album’s lead single, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” topped charts worldwide, helping Houston become the first female artist to earn four No. 1 singles from one album.

“Whitney” went on to sell more than 20 million copies globally.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963, Houston was a singer, actress, producer, model and songwriter. In 2009, Guinness World Records named her the most-awarded female artist ever.

She passed away in 2012 at the age of 48.
