Anna Mae Robertson, one of the last surviving members of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion — known as the Six Triple Eight — has died at 101, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The all-Black, all-women Army unit was sent to Europe during World War II to tackle a massive mail backlog, processing more than 17 million letters in just three months.
Despite facing racism and segregation within the military, the battalion boosted morale for troops across Europe.
Robertson, who later settled in Milwaukee, was honored in 2022 with the Congressional Gold Medal. A feature film, “The Six Triple Eight” by Tyler Perry, brought her story to the screen.
