(AURN News) — Voters in three states are heading to the polls today, with one of the biggest contests in Wisconsin. Democrats there are deciding whether state Rep. Francesca Hong, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, becomes their nominee for governor.
She has led every recent poll and is backed by Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rep. Ro Khanna of California as she runs to replace retiring Gov. Tony Evers.
It’s the state’s first open governor’s race since 2010, and it’s being watched nationally as a test of whether a DSA candidate can win statewide in a battleground President Donald Trump carried by fewer than 30,000 votes. Her closest rival is Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
In Alabama, voters in four congressional districts, including the state’s majority-Black 7th District, are casting ballots in a special primary after a lengthy court fight restored the district’s map.
And in South Carolina, Republicans are choosing a nominee for the Senate seat left vacant by Sen. Lindsey Graham’s death last month.
The Alabama and South Carolina races could head to runoffs if no candidate wins a majority tonight.
