(AURN News) — It was a big night for Democrats nationwide, with major victories that reshaped the political map ahead of 2026. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won the governor’s race, flipping the seat to Democratic control and solidifying her reputation as a rising national figure.

In Virginia, Abigail Spanberger defeated Winsome Earle-Sears, according to NBC News projections, giving Democrats their first gubernatorial win there in years. And in New York City, Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist, pulled off one of the most stunning upsets in recent memory. Set to become the city’s first Muslim and first millennial mayor, Mamdani triumphed over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, and Republican Curtis Sliwa — signaling a dramatic shift toward progressive politics and sparking new debate over the Democratic Party’s future. Democrats also secured additional victories in key states nationwide.
