(AURN News) — Two separate acts of violence in different states are now under federal investigation.
In Michigan, authorities say a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Lebanon drove a truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township and exchanged gunfire with security. Officials are calling it a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.”
The suspect was killed and one security guard was injured. About 140 preschool students and staff were safely evacuated.
The suspect had previously served time in federal prison after pleading guilty in a case involving attempting to provide material support to ISIS. Authorities have not said whether that history is connected to the synagogue attack.
In Virginia, authorities are also investigating a shooting on the campus of Old Dominion University.
“I’d like to acknowledge the students who showed extreme bravery and courage by containing the shooter and stopping further loss of life,” said Dominique Evans, the FBI special agent in charge of the Norfolk field office.
Authorities say one person was killed and two others were wounded after a gunman opened fire inside Constant Hall at Old Dominion University. ROTC students subdued the shooter, who is also dead. The FBI is investigating the incident as a possible act of terrorism.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
