(AURN News) — Rep. Summer Lee, D-Pa., is demanding answers from the Commerce Department over potential ties between the Trump administration and NSO Group, a firm already blacklisted by the U.S. government.
NSO Group’s Pegasus spyware can reportedly access phones, text messages, calls and location data without users ever clicking a link.
Researchers estimate the technology may have been used to target up to 50,000 people worldwide, including journalists, activists and government officials.
There is now concern that the same technology could be making its way into U.S. hands.
Lee is pointing to the company’s new leadership, including former Trump ambassador David Friedman, while raising concerns that federal agencies could begin using the tools domestically.
Just last year, lawmakers uncovered that ICE had already been using similar spyware tools capable of secretly accessing encrypted messages and real-time location data.
