Let’s finish the job: that’s a theme that ran through President Biden’s State of the Union Address as he urged bipartisanship.
“And to my Republican friends, we could work together last Congress. There’s no reason we can’t work together and find consensus on important things in this Congress as well,” President Biden said.
While speaking on the House floor Tuesday night, the president said, despite disagreements, Democrats and Republicans came together time and time again during his first two years. He touted signing more than 300 bipartisan laws and said that Democrats and Republicans can continue to work together in the future.
The parents of Tyre Nichols were also at the State of the Union less than a week after burying their son, who was severely beaten by Memphis Police.
The president said that what happened to Tyre in Memphis has happened far too often and that the country needs to do better in holding law enforcement to higher standards. He also said there needs to be more resources to reduce violent crime and more community intervention programs, and urged lawmakers to come together and finish the job on police reform.
