Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama, joined by (CBC) Chairman Steve Horsford and other CBC members, is urging the passage of the Day Act to make December 1 a federal holiday commemorating the arrest of Parks.

On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested in , Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott and galvanizing the movement.

Here’s Rep. Sewell on the potential new holiday:

“By commemorating the arrest of Rosa Parks with a new federal holiday, we will help ensure that her brave sacrifice is never forgotten. Each year, Rosa Parks Day will serve as a reminder of the power of ordinary Americans to achieve extraordinary social change. It will become the first federal holiday in our nation’s history to honor a woman and to honor a Black woman.”
