Search and recovery efforts are ongoing after an outbreak of deadly tornadoes across Mississippi and Alabama that left more than two dozen people dead.

“What we’ve seen over the last 36 hours in Mississippi, on the one hand, has been heartbreaking, but on the other hand, has been inspiring because Mississippians have done what Mississippians. In times of tragedy, they stand up and they show up,” said Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves.

He was joined by state and federal officials Sunday as they pledged support. He also thanked the Biden administration for rolling forward the federal state of emergency.

The National Weather Service said Friday’s tornado that tore through parts of Mississippi packed estimated wind speeds of 166 to 200 miles per hour and devastated multiple rural communities.
