The five former Memphis police officers charged in the death of Tyre Nichols have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated kidnapping, official misconduct, and official oppression. They were ordered to return back to court on May 1.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson released a statement saying it becomes more clear, he said, that we are not dealing with a few rotten apples. We are dealing with a rotten tree. He later says the list of names lost to police violence is growing longer, yet the list of laws passed to address the situation remains empty.
After that arraignment hearing, RowVaughn Wells, the mother of Tyre, spoke passionately outside the courtroom: “Because I feel very numb right now. This nightmare, basically, that I’m going through right now, I’m waiting for somebody to wake me up. I want each and every one of those police officers to be able to look me in the face. They, they haven’t done that yet. They couldn’t even do that today after what they did to my son.”
