Bermuda is getting pummeled by a major Category 4 hurricane. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami says Hurricane Nicole is about 180 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, with maximum sustained winds of 130 mph. Rains already are hitting the tiny island and authorities have ordered schools and government offices closed.

Doors and windows are rattling across Bermuda as a powerful storm bears down on the island. Hurricane Nicole is centered about 55 miles south-southwest of the island, with sustained winds of 125 mph. It’s expected to pass just a couple of miles east of Bermuda late this morning.
